In the quiet darkness of a North Philadelphia corner, the life of 16-year-old Calvin 'C.J.' Johnson IV was tragically cut short on the night of June 9, 2023. A sophomore at Sayre High School, he was a young man who split his time between his mother's home in Drexel Hill and his father's in South Jersey and West Philadelphia. That evening, he and three friends found themselves stranded and trying to get a ride home after an Airbnb party they had attended was abruptly ended by a fight.
As the teenagers waited, a group of young men emerged from the shadows. One of them cornered Johnson against a car, pressing a gun to his chest in an attempted robbery. When it became clear that Johnson had nothing to give, the gunman fired three shots, the sound piercing the night and forever altering the lives of those present. Police officers arrived to find the critically wounded teenager and rushed him to Temple University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation that followed involved months of dedicated police work, including interviewing witnesses, analyzing phone records, and speaking with young people who knew both Johnson and the individuals suspected of being involved. This persistence ultimately led to a breakthrough in the case. In November 2023, authorities arrested 17-year-old Jermaine Williford Jr. in connection with the shooting. He has since been charged with murder and illegal gun possession, among other related crimes.
While one suspect was in custody, the investigation continued. Another 16-year-old, who was reportedly present during the attempted robbery but is not believed to have been the shooter, was also charged with gun-related offenses. The Philadelphia police have indicated that they are still actively searching for two other teenagers they believe were involved in the incident that led to Johnson's untimely death. For his family, the news of an arrest was a step towards justice, though it did little to quell the profound sadness of their loss.
