Just after dawn on January 1, 1993, a fire raced through an apartment building at 310 East 17th Avenue in Eugene, Oregon. Inside unit #7 was Aden J.D. Wood, a 20-year-old male whose new year began with smoke and heat and ended with silence. Fire and police investigators later determined that the blaze had been set deliberately; the 20-year-old male died from inhaling the products of that combustion, a life cut short not by accident but by another's flame.
