In the summer of 2020, a dispute between housemates in Eugene, Oregon, turned fatal, ending the life of 62-year-old Thomas Robert Michaud. On the evening of July 5th, at approximately 7:03 p.m., the Lane County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a residence on Smithoak Street in the northern part of the city following a report of a gunshot wound.
Upon their arrival, deputies discovered a grim scene. Thomas Michaud was found deceased, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Two other men were present at the home when law enforcement arrived. The initial investigation by the Sheriff's Office indicated that the three men were roommates. It was revealed that a physical altercation concerning their living situation had erupted shortly before the shooting.
The investigation into the death of the male victim led to the arrest of one of his housemates. Martin Joyce, a 59-year-old resident of Eugene, was taken into custody and lodged at the Lane County Jail on a charge of murder. Authorities assured the public that there was no further threat to the community in connection with this violent incident. An obituary for Thomas Michaud was later published in the Eugene Register-Guard.
