Justin Lee Gardner, a 17-year-old White male, tragically lost his life in the early morning hours of August 30, 2015, in Eugene, Oregon. The fatal incident occurred at a party taking place at the Stadium Park Apartments, where Gardner sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The events that unfolded at the gathering led to the identification of two individuals who had discharged firearms. One of these individuals was 19-year-old Zachary Beauchamp.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Beauchamp was arrested and subsequently charged with manslaughter in the death of Gardner. It was later reported that Beauchamp and Gardner had been friends.
A second person, 19-year-old Sean Edward Jones, was also identified as having fired a weapon at the party. He was later indicted on charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Menacing, and Reckless Endangering, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Jones turned himself in to Eugene Police detectives on the evening of September 3.
In December 2015, a Lane County jury found Zachary Beauchamp guilty of first-degree manslaughter. The prosecution maintained that the shooting was a reckless act rather than an intentional one. The evidence presented indicated that Beauchamp had fired two shots into the crowded apartment from outside the front door, with one of the bullets striking and killing Gardner.
Sean Edward Jones, who had also been a childhood friend of Gardner, accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to firing six gunshots at the party after witnessing Beauchamp being removed from the gathering. In exchange for his testimony against Beauchamp, Jones was sentenced to 15 months in prison. During his sentencing, Justin Gardner's mother addressed the court, speaking about the close friendship her son had shared with Jones since they were children and asking Jones to dedicate a part of his life to helping young people avoid similar tragic paths.
