On April 12, 2016, a deadly shooting occurred at Emerald Park in Eugene, Oregon, resulting in the death of John Mills, a 29-year-old resident of Springfield, Oregon. The incident involved a confrontation between the suspect and a group of people, including Mills and another victim, 21-year-old Cain Barnett of Eugene.
