In the early morning hours of August 4, 2000, a fatal encounter unfolded in downtown Portland, Oregon, that would claim the life of James Stewart, a 50-year-old Caucasian male. At approximately 1:18 a.m., officers responded to a report of an assault near Southwest 6th Avenue and Burnside Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered Stewart lying unconscious on the ground.

According to witness accounts, the incident began when two African-American men and one African-American woman, all described as being in their twenties, approached Stewart and engaged him in conversation.
