Investigators noted that there were no immediate signs of a struggle. Lacrecia later mentioned that it appeared the perpetrator had entered through the kitchen door, as the front door was unusually unlocked. The night before, Gabrielle had been home alone, a fact she had innocently shared on social media, tweeting, 'Have the house to myself everybody gone.' Her final tweet, sent at 9:24 p.m., simply mentioned her intention to get something to eat.
In the days following the discovery of Gabrielle's body, the Tulsa Police Department began their investigation. Suspicion, however, soon fell upon James Roylee Barber, an ex-boyfriend of Gabrielle's mother. Barber was arrested on unrelated warrants on March 13, 2013, and later pleaded guilty to gun and drug charges, which resulted in a prison sentence.
