On November 15, 2004, the body of 47-year-old Frances Smith was discovered behind a residence on Bryden Road in Columbus, Ohio. Smith, who was a Black woman, died as a result of strangulation. It was noted that she had been beaten and was found unclothed, indicating a particularly brutal attack. She had last been seen alive the previous night at approximately 10:30 PM.
