Jeremy Gordaneer was a gentle, playful, and immensely talented multimedia artist, a man his wife said had a miraculous ability to put people at ease with his disarming humor. The 49-year-old father of two grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, mentored by his accomplished artist father, James Gordaneer. Jeremy’s own artistic path was blossoming; having recently earned a master's degree in scenic design from the University of Alberta, he was embarking on a new creative chapter. He was remembered for his warm brown eyes, his ubiquitous cap, and a style his wife lovingly described as a "stylish hobo." He had deep roots in the arts communities of Victoria, Montreal, and Edmonton, and friends recalled him as a unique, open, and curious collaborator who could make something beautiful out of anything.
In late August 2021, Jeremy, who was living in Edmonton, Alberta, flew to Victoria to help his mother as she recovered from eye surgery.
On the evening of August 30, he had dinner with his two adult daughters, Sylvie and Clea. He was happy, his wife, Thea Patterson, recalled of their last phone call as he walked toward his mother's home in the quiet, upscale Rockland neighborhood. He was last seen outside her building in the 1000-block of Carberry Gardens at 7:51 p.m. In the pre-dawn hours of the next day, August 31, the tranquility of the neighborhood was shattered. Around 5 a.m., neighbors reported hearing loud popping sounds, like blown tires.
When police and paramedics were called to the residence, they found Jeremy inside, suffering from what they described as life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of first responders, he died at the scene. His death was quickly deemed a homicide, and the investigation was taken over by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU). Investigators have not publicly disclosed how Jeremy was killed or what kind of weapon was used. Police stated at the time that they did not believe there was a wider risk to the public, but the violent death of a man described by all who knew him as gentle and kind left a community in shock and his family bewildered.
The investigation into Jeremy's murder remains active, but years have passed without an arrest or a publicly identified suspect. Police have appealed for information, asking anyone who was in the area of Carberry Gardens between 6 p.m. on August 30 and 6 a.m. on August 31, 2021, to come forward with any video or dashcam footage. The lack of answers has been a palpable weight on his family. "I want to know what happened," his wife Thea told reporters. "I want to understand the series of events that could have unfolded... because it makes no sense to me."
On the first anniversary of his death, his daughters and sister released a video through the Victoria Police Department, pleading for information. "Someone took our dad away," his daughter Clea said. "So I think we just really want to know what happened and why we don’t get to have a dad anymore." His sister, Alisa, described the immense pain and mystery that had upended her life, saying, "I don’t really know how to exist in this world without Jeremy. There’s a huge void." His family struggles to comprehend who would commit such an act against a man who did not invite violence into his life.
As of August 2026, Jeremy Gordaneer's homicide is unsolved. The profound loss is still felt deeply by his family, friends, and the Canadian arts community, who mourn a creative, gentle soul whose life was cut short just as it was reaching a new peak. His family continues to hope that someone, somewhere, will come forward with the information needed to bring them answers and a measure of justice. Anyone with information about the murder of Jeremy Gordaneer is asked to contact the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit information line at 250-380-6211.
