Phouvong Phommaviset, a 26-year-old Asian man, was killed in a case that unfolded against a period of intense gang-related violence across British Columbia's Lower Mainland. On January 2, 2002, his badly burned remains were discovered near the Fraser River in Richmond, in the area of Number 8 Road and River Road. The killing was treated as a homicide and would become one of Richmond's unresolved murders from that violent period.
