A beloved son, husband, and father, Mark Anthony Hughes was a hardworking and family-oriented man whose life was cut short at the age of 35. His mother, Patricia Turner, remembers him as a man who was loved by many and who adored his three children, enjoying frequent outings with them. Friends and family described him as a funny, loving, single father and the best friend anyone could ask for. A resident of San Francisco, California, Mark had previously worked in construction, a career he had to leave after being diagnosed with epilepsy in 2016. He then channeled his creativity into becoming a music producer. Mark was a man who encouraged his children to excel in school, and his memory was so cherished that his daughter, Ariana, paid tribute to him in her high school graduation photo, ensuring he was part of her milestone achievement.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 14, 2020, Mark was on Jones Street in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, a place his mother
said he would visit to see friends. At approximately 1:50 a.m., near 20 Jones Street, he was approached by what police believe were more than two individuals. During the encounter, Mark was shot multiple times. Officers from the San Francisco Police Department and emergency responders arrived on the scene, but despite their life-saving efforts, Mark succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Mark Anthony Hughes’s male homicide was launched by the San Francisco Police Department’s Homicide Detail. Investigators have considered robbery as a possible motive for the attack. While they possess surveillance video from the area, its quality has been described as poor, presenting a challenge for the investigation. With no suspects publicly identified and no arrests made, the case has grown cold, leaving his family without answers or closure.
In the years following his death, Mark’s family has continued to grieve his profound loss. "I feel like it just happened yesterday," his mother Patricia Turner shared in a March 2022 interview. "The pain never goes away... you don't just kill the person like you kill their families, their friends, and people that cared about them." His wife, Valentina Santiago, expressed that there were no words to explain how much he is missed, calling him "that one piece to our family puzzle that we can never get back." The family’s home is filled with photos of Mark, including one from a birthday trip to Hollywood, keeping his memory alive.
The case remains an open and active investigation. In March 2022, on the two-year anniversary of the murder, the San Francisco Police Department issued a public appeal for information and announced a reward. The City and County of San Francisco has authorized a $25,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspect or suspects responsible for the murder of Mark Anthony Hughes. The family hopes this incentive will encourage someone to come forward.
