Claudio Alejandro Cossio, a 21-year-old man known to his loved ones as “Cayito,” was a kind and gentle soul who valued family above all else. His tall frame might have been the first thing people noticed, but it was his compassionate nature that captured their hearts. Raised in Chicago, Illinois, by his parents, Nohemi and Hector, Claudio grew up with a profound sense of empathy, having experienced the pain of losing family and friends at a young age.
This understanding shaped him into a person who consistently put the happiness and safety of others before his own, always ready with a laugh or a hug to create a cherished memory.
A devoted father to his young daughter, Valeria, Claudio embraced his role with immense love. Though his time as a parent was short, he showered her with affection and surrounded her with the warmth of their entire family. He was also a beloved older brother to Hector and Mia, enjoying the time they spent together. A baseball enthusiast, Claudio was described by his family as a kind soul who was confident and comfortable in himself, from his sense of humor to his sense of style. He made it his priority to make those around him feel comfort, joy, and happiness, whether at home, school, or work.
On the afternoon of April 5, 2020, which was Palm Sunday, Claudio was sitting in a parked car with a friend in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood, in the 4100 block of South Sacramento Avenue. In a sudden and senseless act of violence, shots were fired at the vehicle. Claudio was struck and killed. Another man who was with him was also targeted in the attack but survived. The shooting was sudden, unexpected, and seemingly random, leaving a loving family shattered and a community searching for answers.
For years, the case remained a painful mystery for Claudio’s family. But investigators were meticulously working to connect the dots in a string of similar, unprovoked shootings that had plagued the city’s Southwest Side throughout 2020. A major breakthrough came with the recovery of a.40-caliber handgun in the summer of that year. Ballistic evidence from the weapon began to link several seemingly unrelated homicides. Police also delved into the social media footprint of a potential suspect, finding further connections.
The investigation ultimately led to Antonio Reyes, who was just a teenager at the time of the killings. Authorities identified him as an alleged serial killer responsible for a nine-month reign of terror in 2020, randomly targeting and killing six Hispanic men, including Claudio. Reyes was first arrested in December 2020 for the murder of another victim, 26-year-old Luis Davalos Garcia, and had been in custody since 2021. In February 2025, authorities announced new charges against Reyes, formally accusing him of the murders of Claudio and four other men, as well as the attempted murders of four other people, including three young children.
Following the announcement of the charges, Claudio’s mother, Nohemi Cossio, spoke of the complex wave of emotions she felt. "It's a lot of mixed emotions," she said. "I really didn't think I would see this day, because it's been so long." The long-awaited step toward accountability was a painful but necessary part of the healing process for a family that had endured years of uncertainty. "My son will have justice, along with all these other innocent victims," she affirmed.
Antonio Reyes, nicknamed "Redrum" by law enforcement, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and is currently awaiting trial. While incarcerated, he also allegedly attempted to kill his cellmate with a shank. For the families of his victims, the legal proceedings are a slow and arduous path. For the community, the charges brought a sense of relief that a man responsible for so much random brutality was off the streets.
Claudio Cossio’s life was not defined by its tragic end, but by the love he gave and the kindness he showed in his 21 years. His family remembers a gentle giant, a devoted father, and a compassionate young man who wanted nothing more than to see the people he cared about happy. As they continue to navigate their grief, they hold onto the cherished memories and the enduring love he left behind, waiting for the day justice is fully served.
