Donovan James Scott, a man remembered for the joy, warmth, and positive influence he brought to those around him, was 32 years old when his life was cut short. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on May 16, 1996, Donovan was known by friends and family for creating meaningful bonds and lasting memories. Those who knew him recall a life defined by the happiness he shared, and they hold onto the experiences they shared as a source of comfort.
On the night of October 13, 2026, Donovan was at a
residence in his hometown of Lake Charles. At approximately 9:30 p.m., he heard noises outside the home on the 1200 block of Meadow Drive. When he went to see what was happening, he discovered two individuals attempting to break into his vehicle. Donovan confronted them, and an altercation began. During the dispute, one of the individuals shot him. The suspects then fled the scene.
Emergency medical personnel were called to the quiet residential street and found Donovan suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, but he tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Lake Charles community was left to grapple with a sudden act of violence that took a man who was simply defending his property.
The Lake Charles Police Department immediately launched an investigation, with Detective Sergeant Kevin Hoover leading the case. Through their work, detectives quickly identified two suspects they believed were responsible for Donovan’s murder: 18-year-old Brandon Watson and 22-year-old Kenneth Bryant. An intensive search for the two men began, culminating in their capture just two days after the shooting.
On the evening of October 15, 2026, a joint team of Lake Charles Police detectives, SWAT officers, and the U.S. Marshals Service located the suspects at a home in the 4400 block of Canal Street. Watson and Bryant were arrested without incident at approximately 9:54 p.m. Both men were charged with first-degree murder. Bryant faced an additional charge for possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies. A judge set Watson's bond at $4 million and Bryant's bond at $4.25 million.
Family and friends gathered to honor Donovan’s life and legacy. A visitation was held on the morning of Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church on Enterprise Boulevard in Lake Charles, followed by a funeral service at the same location. The arrangements were handled by Stevens' Funeral Home. In his obituary, loved ones stated that while Donovan is no longer present, the bonds he created and the experiences he shared will endure.
As of October 2026, the investigation into Donovan Scott's death was ongoing, and the cases against Brandon Watson and Kenneth Bryant were proceeding through the justice system.
