Germaine Hubbard, a 15-year-old boy from Mount Olive, Mississippi, is remembered by those who knew him as a good kid who found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was a former student at Mount Olive High School and had recently started the new school year at Jefferson Davis County High School. In the wake of his death, social media was filled with shared memories and prayers for his grieving family.

On the night of Saturday, October 10, 2026, Germaine was a backseat passenger in a car with three other people. At around 11:30 p.m., as they were driving on Collins Spencer Road near U.S. Highway 84 in a rural part of Covington County, their path was blocked by a silver car that had stopped in the roadway. According to witnesses in Germaine's car, three individuals exited the silver car and began shooting at their vehicle as they tried to drive away. One of the rounds penetrated the trunk and struck Germaine in the back.

The driver rushed Germaine to Covington County Hospital in the nearby city of Collins. When Covington County Sheriff's deputies arrived, medical staff were performing CPR on the teenager, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The investigation began immediately. Witnesses told deputies that earlier in the evening, a firearm had been taken from one of the occupants of their car at a gas station. They were on their way to a residence to try to get the gun back when they were confronted by the suspects in the silver car. Investigators from the Covington County Sheriff’s Office learned that the suspects believed the car Germaine was in had been following them, which allegedly prompted the shooting.

Based on witness statements from the hospital, investigators quickly identified two primary suspects: 21-year-old Zyquarian O’Neal Magee, also known as “Zy” or “30,” and 22-year-old Tagan Dontrell Barnes, known as “T-Rock.” The two men were located and arrested at a hotel in Magee, Mississippi. Both were charged with first-degree murder and shooting into a motor vehicle. A judge set their bonds at $1,750,000 for the murder charge and $250,000 for the shooting charge. A third suspect, Anthony Barnes Jr., was arrested later and also charged with first-degree murder.

A juvenile was initially considered a person of interest but was later cleared by investigators. The Covington County Chief Deputy Sheriff, Ricky Lott, noted that the individuals involved were believed to have some affiliation with gangs. He also indicated that more arrests were possible as the investigation continued.

The community in and around Mount Olive mourned the sudden and violent loss of the young man. Chief Deputy Lott described Germaine as, by all accounts, a "good kid." The case remains in the litigation phase as of late October 2026.
