Courtney Marie Mullis was a beautiful, free-spirited soul who marched to the beat of her own drum. The 26-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina native was known for her unique sense of style, infectious personality, and an unforgettable sense of humor that left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Courtney had a creative heart and a vivid imagination, which she expressed through drawing and writing.
She loved music, watching her favorite movies, and spending time with the people she cherished. Her family remembers her as someone who embraced everything that made her different, a quality they admired. Above all, Courtney loved her family fiercely and was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, and aunt. Known affectionately as “Aunt Court Court,” she adored her nieces and nephews and shared an especially deep bond with her nephew Blake, with whom she had long conversations and played the video game Fortnite.
The early morning of Wednesday, October 7, 2026, brought a violent end to Courtney’s life. Shortly after 5 a.m., she was shot in the 6900 block of Statesville Road near Spector Drive in north Charlotte. Investigators from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) reported that Courtney and a suspect appeared to have been "commuting through" the area when the shooting occurred. One witness driving by reported seeing a woman lying on the ground near a vehicle while a man pulled items from the car's trunk before running from the scene. When officers responded to an "assault with a deadly weapon" call, they found Courtney with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Paramedics with MEDIC rushed her to a local hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The police response was swift. CMPD North Division officers and a K9 unit searched the area and arrested a suspect near the scene shortly after the incident. He was identified as 25-year-old Jamere Robert Edwards of Bluefield, West Virginia. According to reports, Edwards and Mullis had been in a relationship and had lived together at one point. Investigators searched a car for evidence as part of the crime scene processing. Homicide detectives interviewed Edwards at the Law Enforcement Center before officially charging him.
Jamere Edwards was charged with murder and one count of resisting, delaying, or obstructing an officer. The second charge stemmed from allegations that he provided police with a false name during the initial investigation. After the charges were filed, he was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and held in jail without bail. A court later ordered that Edwards undergo a mental health evaluation as soon as possible.
Courtney’s death prompted an outpouring of grief from her extensive family and a discussion within the community about the need for more resources for victims of domestic violence. Her family, including her parents, stepparents, and numerous siblings, laid her to rest following a service at the McEwen Funeral Service Mint Hill Chapel on October 15, 2026. She was buried at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill.
As of October 2026, the investigation into Courtney's murder was still active and ongoing, with Detective Moran of the CMPD Homicide Unit leading the case. Jamere Edwards was scheduled for a court appearance at the end of that month, and his case remains in litigation. Authorities have asked that anyone with information about the shooting call the Homicide Unit at 704-432-8477 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
