Shoumana Abelanda Toutoute was a driven and caring 19-year-old woman with a bright future she was actively building. A graduate of Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, Florida, she was enrolled at Valencia College to pursue a nursing degree, a path that followed her dream of helping people. While some family members said she aspired to be a doctor, her focus was on nursing, and a pair of stethoscopes she left hanging on her bedroom wall served as a constant reminder of her goal. To support herself, Shoumana, a Black woman, worked for Amazon. Her family had moved to Orlando from Haiti, and she was surrounded by loved ones, including her mother, Yfonise Innocent, and her stepfather.

The life Shoumana was creating was violently cut short in the earliest moments of Thursday, October 1, 2026. At approximately 12:55 a.m., while she was asleep in her own bed at the Lorenzo at East Mil apartments on Ole Heritage Drive, a barrage of gunfire erupted outside. At least four bullets pierced through her bedroom window, striking her as she slept. Her stepfather was in an adjacent room and heard the terrifying volley of shots. The whole family was jolted from their sleep by the violence.

Despite her injuries, Shoumana managed to get out of her bedroom and collapsed in the living room of the apartment. Her family watched in horror as she cried out for her mother. A family friend who was visiting later recalled her final moments, "She called her mom, you know, that's the last words." Orange County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a 911 call about the shooting and found Shoumana suffering from a critical gunshot wound. She was rushed to a local hospital, but she did not survive her injuries. Later that day, her family returned from the hospital, still wearing their visitor stickers, visibly distraught and in shock as they faced the bullet-riddled apartment and the devastating loss of their daughter.

The investigation was launched immediately by the Orange County Sheriff's Office. Detectives found no evidence to suggest that Shoumana or anyone in her family was the intended target of the shooting. "We don't have a problem with anyone outside. That's why we would like to know what happened," a family friend explained. The seemingly random and senseless nature of the crime left her family searching for answers. Homicide detectives began following leads and urged the public to come forward with any information, no matter how small.

In the days following the shooting, the sheriff's office released surveillance images showing two persons of interest who were seen near the apartment complex around the time the shots were fired. Authorities stated they wanted to identify and speak with the individuals, who they believed might have crucial information, though they were not officially named as suspects. Shoumana's mother, Yfonise, showed reporters the damage inside their home, and through tears, repeatedly pleaded for "justice" for her daughter.

In the wake of the tragedy, Shoumana's family was left not only with immense grief but also with the unexpected financial burden of a funeral. A GoFundMe campaign was organized by her mother to help lay her daughter to rest. The community shared her story on social media, hoping to help detectives find those responsible for ending the life of a young woman with so much promise.

As of October 2026, the Orange County Sheriff's Office had not announced any arrests in the case, and the investigation remained active. Detectives continue to seek help from the public to solve the case and bring closure to Shoumana's heartbroken family. A reward of up to $5,000 is available through Crimeline for any information that leads to an arrest. Tipsters can call the Orange County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at 407-836-4357 or leave an anonymous tip with Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
