Reyna Espinosa was remembered by her family as a loving and special person whose kindness left a permanent mark on their hearts. A 60-year-old resident of San Miguel, California, she meant so much to her family and to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her loved ones said the memories she gave them would forever stay in their hearts.

On the night of Monday, September 28, 2026, a domestic disturbance shattered the quiet of the small community. Around 10 p.m., deputies from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a home in the 500 block of River Road after receiving reports of shots fired. Inside the residence, they found Reyna suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. First responders immediately began lifesaving measures, but her injuries were too severe, and she died at the scene.

Investigators quickly determined that the fatal shooting stemmed from a verbal argument between Reyna and a man identified as Jose Sevilla Ruiz, a 66-year-old also from San Miguel. While authorities did not confirm the exact nature of their relationship, they described the incident as a domestic dispute. Before deputies arrived, Ruiz had fled the location. A weapon was recovered at the home.

Witnesses and evidence led investigators to believe Ruiz was driving a gold Ford F-150 pickup truck and was traveling eastbound, out of San Luis Obispo County. One resident later recalled seeing the truck before the shooting, noting that it ran a stop sign and parked erratically. The sight of the street blocked off by law enforcement later that night shocked residents, who described their town as a place where "everybody knows everyone" and such violence was extremely rare.

The search for Ruiz concluded the following morning. On Tuesday, September 29, at approximately 8:45 a.m., members of the Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit, with assistance from the Wasco Police Department and the California Highway Patrol, located Ruiz in Wasco, a city in Kern County. He was taken into custody without incident. The Sheriff's Office noted that they did not issue an immediate public statement about the search while it was active, fearing it could compromise the investigation and alert the suspect.

Ruiz was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on a charge of murder and held without bail. Investigators stated they believe the killing was an isolated incident and that there was no further threat to the public. They also confirmed there were no other outstanding suspects.

In the wake of the tragedy, Reyna’s family created a GoFundMe page to help with the unexpected costs of her funeral, memorial, and transportation. In a statement on the fundraising page, her family shared their grief, writing, “Reyna was a loving and special person who meant so much to our family and to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness, love, and the memories she gave us will forever stay in our hearts.” As of October 2026, the investigation was ongoing. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the Detective Division at (805) 781-4500.
