Jaylin Isaiah Ash was a young man with many hopes and dreams for his future, remembered by his family as a beloved son. His mother, Lillie Wilkins, described the profound heartbreak and devastation that she and his loved ones felt after his sudden and tragic death. Born on March 7, 2003, Jaylin was a 23-year-old man from Toledo, Ohio, whose loss left his family feeling completely crushed as they tried to make sense of the violence that took his life.
The final moments of Jaylin’s life
unfolded late on a Sunday night. Just before midnight on September 27, 2026, officers from the Toledo Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of Knapp Street, near the Park Apartments complex. Upon their arrival at the scene, they found Jaylin suffering from at least one serious gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Jaylin succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Toledo Police Department immediately began a homicide investigation, and their work quickly led to a person of interest. Detectives identified 23-year-old Keyvontae Williams-Brooks as a suspect in the fatal shooting. Williams-Brooks was arrested and formally charged with Jaylin's murder. The case moved forward swiftly within the legal system. On October 6, 2026, a Lucas County grand jury returned an indictment against Williams-Brooks, charging him with two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault. The indictment also included multiple firearm specifications related to the alleged crimes. Even after the arrest and indictment, authorities confirmed that the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting remained active.
This was not Jaylin's first encounter with the justice system. Court and news records show that in January 2022, when he was 18 years old, he was arrested along with another man in connection with a series of armed robberies at cell phone stores in Toledo. Police were investigating a robbery at a Metro PCS store on Cherry Street where two men had robbed a clerk at gunpoint, taking the cash register drawers. Officers used K-9s to follow a trail of dropped change, cash, and store cards, which led them to a nearby home on Hillwood Drive. Inside, they found Jaylin and the other suspect. Following questioning and a search of the residence, Jaylin was charged with one count of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. His bond was set at $50,000, and he was booked into the Lucas County Corrections Center.
In the aftermath of Jaylin’s violent death, his family was confronted with not only overwhelming grief but also the unexpected financial burden of arranging a funeral. His mother started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of a memorial service and burial. In her plea for support, she wrote of the family's desire to send Jaylin off respectfully and to honor his life with the dignity and love he deserved. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the kindness, prayers, and support her family received during an incredibly painful and difficult time.
Family and friends gathered to say their final goodbyes to Jaylin on Monday, October 26, 2026. A public visitation was held in the afternoon at The House of Day Funeral Services Chapel on Nebraska Avenue in Toledo. The funeral service took place immediately afterward at the same location. As of October 2026, the criminal case against Keyvontae Williams-Brooks was proceeding through the Lucas County court system.
