Alara Marie Vasquez, a three-year-old girl, was remembered by her mother as the “sweetest and most purest little girl.” Her mother, Noelia Toledo, said Alara was full of life, a “feisty little girl with the biggest attitude and the biggest personality ever.” Known as a little fashionista and a diva, Alara had a beautiful smile and would wait for her mother to get home from work every day to greet her with a hug and a kiss. Her grandmother, Kesiah Toledo, recalled how Alara often gave compliments, saying things like, “Oh, that’s so pretty. You’re the best grandma.”

The family’s life was shattered in the early morning of September 26, 2026. At approximately 12:53 a.m., Alara’s father, Joseph Roberto Lee Vazquez, made a 911 call from their residence in the 1100 block of Dunlap Road in Milledgeville, Georgia, reporting that his daughter had been shot. At the time, Alara's mother was at her night job. Inside the home with Alara and her father were her two older brothers, ages five and seven. Police believe the three children gained access to a gun while they were playing, and it discharged.

When Milledgeville police officers and a Baldwin County sheriff’s deputy arrived, they found Alara with a severe gunshot wound. Recognizing the gravity of her injuries, the officers rushed her to Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin hospital in their patrol car to provide the fastest possible medical attention. Despite their efforts, Alara succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. The family described the shooting as accidental.

The Milledgeville Police Department began an immediate investigation, with Detective Lt. Marquita Driskell leading the case. Investigators executed a search warrant at the home and recovered the firearm they believe was used in the shooting. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory was scheduled to perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death. The Georgia Division of Family & Children Services also opened a separate investigation into the children's living conditions and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Joseph Vazquez, 26, was taken to the police department for questioning and was subsequently arrested. He was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children and booked into the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center. Police indicated that additional charges could be filed as the investigation continued.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Milledgeville community expressed its grief and offered support to the heartbroken family. Alara’s grandmother started a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral and burial expenses, as well as the cost of relocating Alara's mother and two brothers from the home where the shooting occurred. The family stated they did not want the boys, who were now in the care of their mother, to live with the constant memory of what happened. The fundraiser received an outpouring of support from the community.

The case remains an active investigation by the Milledgeville Police Department as of late September 2026. The family is leaning on relatives and the community for support as they navigate their devastating loss. Noelia Toledo said she was blessed to be Alara’s mother, remembering her daughter as “just beautiful, in every way, shape and form.”
