In the late hours of Memorial Day on May 30, 2016, the life of 34-year-old Tonya Renae Massey was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire at her Milledgeville, Georgia, home. A mother of two boys, Massey was preparing to watch television in her living room when her single-wide mobile home on Lee Street was riddled with bullets. She was struck and killed in the violent onslaught.
Investigators with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office quickly determined that the shooting was not a
random act of violence. Evidence suggested that Massey was not the intended target of the attack. Instead, authorities believe the bullets were meant for her boyfriend, Eric Warren, who had been targeted in previous shootings. Her death was linked to a string of gang-related drive-by shootings that had been plaguing the Milledgeville area.
In the wake of Massey's death, the investigation intensified, leading to the arrests of two men, Vandrick Harden and Kenneth Smith, in connection with the series of drive-by shootings. Harden was charged with two counts of aggravated assault for a shooting in July 2015 where Eric Warren was also a victim. While these arrests were a development in the broader investigation into the gang-related violence, no individuals were immediately charged with the murder of Tonya Massey.
Despite the arrests related to the string of shootings, justice for Tonya Massey has remained elusive. As of June 2017, her murder was officially considered one of Baldwin County's unsolved cases. Authorities have lamented the lack of cooperation from individuals who may have information about the shooting, which has hindered their ability to bring charges specifically for her death. The person or persons responsible for firing the fatal shots that ended the life of the young mother remain at large.
