Elida Shelton, a 63-year-old female, lived with her family in a home in Flower Mound, Texas. On the morning of Wednesday, September 23, 2026, police were dispatched to their residence in the 10700 block of Sunrise Circle to conduct a welfare check. Family members had become worried after two of the home's residents failed to show up for work and could not be reached. At approximately 10:45 a.m., officers arrived and, based on circumstances at the scene, decided to enter the house.
Inside, they made a tragic discovery, finding three deceased individuals.
The victims were identified as Elida, her 65-year-old husband, Carlos Ray Shelton, and their 27-year-old son, Brian Shelton. All three had suffered apparent gunshot wounds. A family member later shared that Brian had recently completed his training to become a ministry leader at his church.
The Flower Mound Police Department immediately began investigating the deaths as a double murder-suicide. Detectives announced their belief that Carlos Shelton was responsible for the deaths of his wife and son before taking his own life. This finding was later confirmed by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, which officially ruled the deaths of Elida and Brian as homicides and the death of Carlos as a suicide. The cause of death for all three was a gunshot wound to the head.
While police have not determined an official motive, relatives offered insight into the pressures the family was facing. Jose Zamarippa, who is married to Carlos and Elida’s daughter, explained that Carlos had recently dealt with medical issues that resulted in expensive and overwhelming bills. "I know he had a lot of medical bills and half of the stuff he paid was going to that," Zamarippa said. He also noted that Carlos had become withdrawn and was not acting like his normal self before the incident.
As of late September 2026, the police investigation was ongoing, but detectives stated they were not seeking any outstanding suspects and that there was no threat to the public. With the primary suspect deceased, the case is considered resolved.
