Brian Shelton, a 27-year-old man from Flower Mound, Texas, had recently completed his training to become a ministry leader at his church. He was looking forward to a future of service and leadership within his community.
On the morning of Wednesday, September 23, 2026, police were asked to conduct a welfare check at the Shelton family home in the 10700 block of Sunrise Circle.
The request was made after two of the home's residents failed to report to work and family members were unable to contact them. At around 10:45 a.m., officers from the Flower Mound Police Department arrived at the residence. Based on the circumstances at the scene, they entered the house to investigate.
Inside, officers made a tragic discovery. Brian Shelton, his 63-year-old mother, Elida Shelton, and his 65-year-old father, Carlos Shelton, were all found deceased. Each had suffered apparent gunshot wounds.
The investigation that followed determined the incident was a double homicide and suicide. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that both Brian and Elida Shelton were victims of homicide, having died from gunshot wounds to the head. The medical examiner ruled Carlos Shelton’s death a suicide from a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators concluded that Carlos Shelton shot and killed his wife and son before taking his own life.
While police did not announce an official motive, a relative offered some insight into the family's situation. The family’s son-in-law, Jose Zamarippa, said that Carlos had recently been dealing with medical issues that resulted in expensive bills. He described his father-in-law as having become withdrawn and not acting like his normal self before the incident. "I know he had a lot of medical bills and half of the stuff he paid was going to that," Zamarippa said. "With all the things going on, high prices, I guess he got really overwhelmed and decided to do that."
As of September 2026, the police investigation was ongoing, but authorities stated they were not seeking any outstanding suspects. The case is considered closed, as the primary suspect was deceased at the scene.
