John McLendon was 54 years old when he died on Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, in Compton. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 303 E. Palmer St. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau case.

The Homicide Report lists him as a Black man and records the address where he was fatally hurt. It says nothing about how the attack happened, who may have been involved or whether he was found at the scene or died later.

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about John McLendon has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. His name is also shared with John McLendon, the Hall of Fame basketball coach who died in 1999, and with a number of other men across the country, so searches for him lead mostly to other people.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

Compton is a city of roughly 95,000 people in the southern part of Los Angeles County. It is known around the world as a center of West Coast hip-hop and has deep roots as a working-class community of homeowners and renters, with neighborhoods of single-family houses on modest lots. The city disbanded its own police department in 2000 and has since contracted with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for law enforcement, which is why the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau handles killings there. Palmer Street is a residential street in the city.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

A man of 54 does not live in a place without being known. Whoever John McLendon was, he had a life in or around Compton, with people who saw him on the street, at home, at work or among friends. Someone who knew him may have heard, at the time or in the years since, what happened at that address on Palmer Street in early February 2006.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of John McLendon could be found in news archives or public records. More than 19 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who lived near the 300 block of East Palmer Street in Compton in February 2006, or who knew a 54-year-old man named John McLendon there, may hold a piece of the story that investigators never received. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
