On June 14, 2023, at approximately 6:10 a.m., 23-year-old Eliasar "Eli" Acosta was found fatally shot in his vehicle in the 400 block of North Bullis Road in Compton, California. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene, where Acosta was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the back.
Acosta, a resident of Paramount, was well-known for his dedication to community service.
For over six years, he actively participated in operating a Fourth of July fireworks stand to raise funds for the Paramount Lions Club. Friends and mentors remember him as a personable individual who could easily connect with others. He began his volunteer work with the Leos Club at Paramount High School and later became an integral member of the Lions Club, contributing to various charitable activities, including delivering food to needy families during the holiday season.
On the night of his death, Acosta had been working as a food delivery driver alongside his girlfriend. After concluding their deliveries, he dropped her off at her home in South Los Angeles around 2 a.m. She believed he had returned safely to his residence in Paramount; however, when she was unable to reach him later, concerns arose. Acosta's vehicle was discovered hours later in Compton by a local resident who reported finding him injured and flagged down a street sweeper for assistance. The exact circumstances leading to his presence in Compton and the events that transpired between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. remain unclear.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not identified any suspects in connection with Acosta's death. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the case and has urged anyone with information to come forward. In the wake of this tragedy, Acosta's family and friends have sought public support to aid with funeral expenses and to honor his memory, highlighting the significant impact he had on his community.
