Esteban Ayon Medrano was 22 years old when he died on Friday, February 23, 2007, in Westmont. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 9301 1/2 South Vermont Avenue. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau case.

He was a Latino man in his early 20s. Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Esteban Ayon Medrano has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. His full name, with two surnames, is fairly distinctive, yet searches found nothing about him or about what happened to him.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect. The "1/2" in the address suggests a rear unit or a second dwelling on the lot, the kind of small apartment common along that stretch of Vermont Avenue, which may mean he was hurt at or near a home, but the record does not say.

Westmont is an unincorporated community in South Los Angeles, bordered by the city of Los Angeles and close to Inglewood. Because it is not part of any city, it is patrolled by the Sheriff's Department rather than the LAPD. It is a neighborhood of small houses, apartment buildings and corner businesses, home mostly to Black and Latino working families. Vermont Avenue, one of the longest streets in Los Angeles, runs north and south through the community, lined with shops, churches, markets and homes.

A young man of 22 has a circle around him: parents, brothers and sisters, friends from school, co-workers. Some of them may have heard, in the days after his death, an account of what happened to him that never reached detectives.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest. The death of a 22-year-old man in Westmont was recorded in the Homicide Report in a single sentence, and it does not appear to have been covered by any news outlet.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Esteban Ayon Medrano could be found in news archives or public records. More than 18 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who knew Esteban Ayon Medrano, or who lived or worked near the 9300 block of South Vermont Avenue in February 2007, may hold information that could help sheriff's homicide detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
