On Monday, August 19, 2002, forty-six-year-old Louis Moss died under violent circumstances in the coastal city of Long Beach, California. Emergency responders and officers from the Long Beach Police Department were summoned to a property in the 2000 block of Pine Avenue, near the intersection of 20th Street. Upon arrival, authorities located Moss, an African American man, but medical intervention could not save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident took place in a bustling residential area just north of downtown Long Beach. Pine Avenue in this section of the city is characterized by a blend of older multi-family apartment complexes, single-family homes, and small commercial establishments. In an active, densely populated neighborhood, an unexpected death draws immediate concern, yet few specific details regarding the immediate scene or the events leading up to Moss's death were publicly disclosed by law enforcement.

Following the discovery, the case was turned over to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Coroners ultimately ruled Moss's death a homicide, confirming that he was killed by criminal violence. However, official reports listed the specific manner or cause of death as "other," and further precise medical findings or weapon details were not released to the general public.

The year 2002 was marked by elevated rates of violent crime across Southern California and the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, placing significant demands on municipal police departments and specialized homicide units. Detectives with the Long Beach Police Department took charge of the investigation into Moss's death, seeking to gather evidence, interview neighbors, and determine whether anyone witnessed an altercation or suspicious activity in the neighborhood around the time of the killing.

Despite police efforts to develop actionable leads, no suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were ever announced in connection with the homicide. Decades later, the case remains unsolved, with no clear motive or perpetrator brought before the courts. Investigators have continued to rely on the possibility that someone with knowledge of what happened at the Pine Avenue residence will come forward to help provide answers and justice for Louis Moss.
