On the warm summer evening of Sunday, July 1, 2012, violence erupted in a residential South Gate neighborhood, claiming the life of a young man and leaving a community searching for answers. Around dinner hour, gunfire and physical commotion disturbed the typically quiet, densely populated stretch of modest single-family homes in the 10500 block of Dorothy Avenue, just south of Tweedy Boulevard. Emergency dispatchers received urgent calls reporting a shooting in progress, with multiple people injured on the block.

When law enforcement and emergency medical responders rushed to the scene shortly after the initial reports, they discovered thirty-year-old Daniel Pereyra, a Latino male, suffering from severe traumatic injuries. Pereyra had been violently assaulted and sustained both gunshot wounds and knife wounds. Despite the arrival of paramedics, his injuries proved catastrophic, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:03 p.m. at 10512 Dorothy Avenue. A second man was also found suffering from critical injuries and was rushed by ambulance to an area trauma center, leaving the residential street cordoned off by yellow crime scene tape as daylight faded.

In the immediate wake of the violence, confusion shrouded the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation. Initial information gathered by the coroner's office listed the victim as an unidentified male in his twenties before he was positively identified as Daniel Pereyra. The location of the incident was also initially misattributed to the neighboring city of Downey before investigators clarified that the violent assault took place within the South Gate community.

The South Gate Police Department coordinated with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau, which assumed lead responsibility for the murder investigation. Detectives and crime scene technicians combed the street and surrounding properties, searching for ballistic evidence, cutting weapons, and any potential surveillance footage from nearby homes or commercial corridors. While investigators documented the horrific combination of stabbing and shooting inflicted on Pereyra, clear information regarding what precipitated the attack remained elusive.

Residents living along Dorothy Avenue expressed deep shock that such extreme bloodshed could shatter their neighborhood on a Sunday evening. Despite door-to-door canvassing and appeals to potential witnesses who may have heard the gunfire or seen vehicles fleeing the 10500 block, no suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were announced. Investigators were left without a clear motive, unable to immediately establish whether the confrontation stemmed from a personal dispute, street violence, or an ambush.

More than a decade later, the murder of Daniel Pereyra remains officially unsolved. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau continues to maintain an open case file and seeks the public's assistance in identifying those responsible. Detectives urge anyone with information regarding the July 1, 2012 attack to contact the Homicide Bureau at 890-5500, or to submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 222-8477.
