On December 16, 2017, eighty-eight-year-old Chester John Bachry died in Los Angeles, California. A white male who had lived in the region for decades, Bachry was recorded by local authorities as the victim of a homicide, with the cause of death categorized under coroner records as other and specific traumatic details withheld from initial public disclosures. His death brought an unexpected, violent end to a long life marked by decades of dedicated public service to the City of Los Angeles.

Bachry had spent much of his adult working life as a municipal employee. For nearly thirty years, he worked within the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, serving as an engineer and administrator in the Bureau of Engineering. Recognized by his fellow civil servants for his commitment and integrity, he was elected to represent municipal workers as a commissioner on the Board of Administration for the Los Angeles City Employees' Retirement System. During the 1980s, Bachry served multiple terms on the retirement board, weighing in on municipal pension management and major financial policies impacting thousands of retired and active city personnel. Outside of his civic duties, he had deep roots in a large Polish-American family originally hailing from Massachusetts, maintaining ties with relatives across the country while building a home in Southern California.

The circumstances surrounding the fatal incident in mid-December 2017 left investigators searching for answers. Homicide detectives responded to process the scene, canvass surrounding properties, and interview neighbors and acquaintances in an effort to trace Bachry's final hours. Because the coroner classified the fatal incident under non-standard trauma rather than a conventional firearm or sharp force incident, detectives faced the delicate task of determining whether the senior citizen had been targeted during a home invasion, confronted in a robbery, or subjected to elder abuse or neglect. Despite thorough forensic examinations, physical evidence at the location yielded limited clues pointing to a specific perpetrator.

The year 2017 saw more than two hundred and eighty homicides across the City of Los Angeles, placing immense strain on local investigative units handling cases spanning gang violence, sudden street confrontations, and suspicious deaths of vulnerable older residents. Investigators urged anyone with knowledge about visitors to Bachry's residence, unusual neighborhood activity, or suspicious individuals in the vicinity around the middle of December to come forward. Despite outreach and inquiries into his personal and financial dealings, leads failed to produce an immediate breakthrough.

More than six years after his death, the homicide of Chester John Bachry remains completely unsolved. No suspects have been publicly named, no motive has been formally confirmed, and no arrests have ever been made in connection with the crime. The Los Angeles Police Department continues to maintain an open case file, asking anyone who possesses information regarding Bachry or the events leading to his death on December 16, 2017, to contact regional homicide detectives or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
