In the early morning hours of September 5, 2026, the life of 17-year-old Darvel D. Thomas was tragically cut short by gun violence in Cahokia Heights, Illinois. The shooting occurred just after 1:30 a.m. in the driveway of a residence on the 800 block of St. William Drive. When officers from the Cahokia Heights Police Department arrived at the scene responding to reports of gunfire, they discovered two teenagers had been shot. Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound. A second victim, a 16-year-old male from the same area, was also injured in the incident but was treated at a hospital and subsequently released.
The investigation into the homicide was swiftly taken over by the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, with more than 20 investigators assigned to the case.
