Joshua Raymun Wansley, a 27-year-old man from the Dallas area, was fatally shot during the evening of September 6, 2026, along the northbound lanes of S.R.L. Thornton Freeway in Dallas. At approximately 6:20 p.m., Dallas police officers were dispatched to the 5600 block of the freeway after receiving a report of a shooting. Investigators determined that Wansley had been struck by gunfire and that the person responsible had not been identified. Dallas Fire-Rescue transported him from the scene to a local hospital in critical condition.

Wansley survived the initial shooting but remained critically injured. According to the Dallas Police Department, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital on September 7, 2026. This differs from some memorial and obituary listings that record September 6 as his date of death; the police account specifically states that the shooting occurred on September 6 and that he was pronounced dead the following day. The case was subsequently treated as a homicide and assigned Dallas Police Department case number 131658-2026.

Investigators have released very little information about what led to the shooting. Police have not publicly identified a motive, described an altercation preceding the gunfire, or released a description or name of the person believed responsible. The Dallas Police Department described the shooter only as an unknown suspect. Subsequent reporting continued to list Wansley's killing among the Dallas homicide investigations in which no arrest had been announced. There is no publicly reported arrest, criminal charge, trial, or conviction connected to his death as of the latest available information. Detectives have continued seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or knows what happened on the freeway that evening.

Wansley had been born April 12, 1999, in Lancaster, Texas. His obituary described a life centered on family and service. He served for six years in the United States Air Force as a firefighter, with assignments at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio, as well as a deployment to Niger in Africa. After leaving military service, he pursued work in real estate and later devoted much of his time to raising his daughter while his wife continued serving on active duty. Family members remembered him for helping others, continually trying to better himself, and the importance he placed on those closest to him. His sudden death left behind his wife, daughter, parents, siblings, extended family and friends while investigators continued working to identify the person who shot him.
