Juan Correa, a 37-year-old Hispanic man from Dallas, Texas, tragically lost his life on April 11, 2017. He was an innocent bystander who was fatally shot by a stray bullet during a robbery. Correa was standing across the street from his home in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood when the incident occurred. The bullet, fired by one of the robbers, struck him as he was nearby.
The robbery involved a group of teenagers who had been robbing multiple people at gunpoint.
During one of these robberies, a man was held up as he got out of his truck on Nisqually Street. As the robbery victim ran to his house, one of the robbers fired a shot, which unfortunately hit Correa. The group of teenagers involved in the robbery included Tradareon Choice, 18, Shemar McCarthy, 17, Joshua Valdez, 17, and Ira Wheeler, 18. Police determined that Choice pulled the trigger, Valdez was the getaway driver, and McCarthy and Wheeler were along for the ride.
All four teenagers were arrested and charged with murder. In February 2019, Tradareon Choice was sentenced to life in prison for his role in Correa's death. The other three suspects, McCarthy, Valdez, and Wheeler, faced charges as well. The case highlighted the devastating impact of such senseless acts on innocent bystanders and their families.
Correa left behind a wife of 15 years and three children, the youngest of whom was only one year old at the time. His family and friends remembered him as a loving family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and riding his horse around town. The community set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the funeral and related expenses.
