Kendrell Lyles, a
37-year-old man, was arrested and charged with Grant's murder. Witnesses reported that Lyles confessed to the crime, and his car matched the description of the vehicle seen with Grant before her death. Lyles also faced charges for the murder of another victim, Kenneth Chichocki, who was killed the day after Grant. The evidence against Lyles included cellphone records placing him at the crime scenes and witness statements implicating him in both murders.
The case drew significant attention due to the rising number of violent crimes against transgender women, particularly Black transgender women, in Dallas at the time.
