A normal Monday morning at the Crossroads Mall in Gulfport, Mississippi, turned tragic on September 7, 2026, ending the life of 31-year-old Shane Basquill. An employee and manager at the local AT&T store, Basquill was at work when the devastating events unfolded around 11:14 a.m. According to witnesses and police reports, 71-year-old Samuel Jerome Andrews arrived at the store, seemingly disgruntled over a bill. He exited his truck armed with a shotgun and walked towards the entrance of the business. Basquill, seeing the armed man approaching, heroically rushed to lock the door in an attempt to protect the customers and employees inside. Andrews, however, fired his weapon through the glass door before Basquill could secure it, gaining entry into the store.

Once inside, Andrews opened fire, striking and killing both Shane Basquill and a 78-year-old customer, Mary Anne Oberlies, who was in the store at the time. Both Basquill and Oberlies were pronounced dead at the scene. There were three other people inside the store who were not physically harmed but witnessed the horrific events. Those who were able called 911 and provided authorities with a description of the shooter and the vehicle he was driving. This quick thinking and vital information allowed responding Gulfport police officers to quickly locate Andrews' vehicle as he attempted to flee the area. A traffic stop was conducted, and Andrews was taken into custody without any further incident.

Following his arrest, Samuel Jerome Andrews was transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of shooting into a crowd. A judge ordered him to be held without bond for the murder charges and set a $500,000 bond for the charge of shooting into a crowd. In the days following the shooting, investigators executed a search warrant at Andrews' home on Five Oaks Drive as they continued to piece together the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation. While a definitive motive has not been officially released by law enforcement, the investigation remains ongoing. The case against Andrews currently awaits further legal proceedings, leaving a community to mourn the senseless loss of two innocent lives, including that of a young man remembered for his final, heroic act of trying to shield others from harm.
