In the late summer of 2026, the life of 38-year-old Shalini Thakur was tragically cut short in a public and violent manner that sent shockwaves through her Sacramento community. On the afternoon of September 8th, Shalini was fatally shot outside a Panera Bread restaurant on Howe Avenue. The man who took her life was 22-year-old Rohit Rohit, with whom she had a history of unwanted and escalating contact. Their acquaintance began through his work as a DoorDash driver, as he would pick up orders from the IHOP where Shalini worked. What started as a seemingly innocuous connection devolved into a relentless campaign of stalking that would ultimately lead to her death. Friends and family described Shalini as a selfless, generous, and vibrant woman with a bubbly personality, who was diligently working towards her goals.

The harassment began around September of 2025 and grew in intensity over the following year. Rohit's behavior became increasingly alarming; he would park outside her home for hours and placed an Apple AirTag under the hood of her vehicle to track her movements. In one particularly disturbing incident, he deflated her tires and then followed her to work so he could offer her help. The stalking escalated to a terrifying home invasion when Rohit managed to get a copy of her apartment key and entered her home while she was sleeping, later claiming he was concerned because she had not responded to his communications. Fearing for her safety, Shalini sought legal protection and was granted a civil harassment restraining order against Rohit in May of 2026. The order mandated that he stay at least 100 yards away from her, her home, and her workplace.

Despite the legal order, Rohit's obsession did not wane. In July, he violated the restraining order by leaving groceries at her front door. Although deputies had probable cause to arrest him for this violation, they were reportedly unable to locate him on multiple occasions. This failure to apprehend him proved to have fatal consequences. On that September afternoon, Rohit confronted Shalini in the Panera parking lot. As she attempted to flee, he chased her down and shot her multiple times. After she fell to the ground, he stood over her and shot her again in the head. A witness was able to capture his license plate number, which allowed authorities to quickly track his vehicle using the FLOCK camera system. When deputies attempted to pull him over on Highway 50, Rohit stopped his car and took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In the aftermath, it was revealed that Rohit, a citizen of India, had entered the United States illegally in 2023. The case highlights a tragic failure to protect a woman who had taken all the appropriate legal steps to ensure her safety. The lack of enforcement of the restraining order and the inability of law enforcement to locate and arrest the suspect for its violation left Shalini vulnerable to the man who would ultimately take her life, leaving her family and friends to mourn a senseless loss and question the system that was meant to protect her.
