In the early hours of a Friday morning, on July 24, 2026, the life of 42-year-old Theodore Montgomery was tragically cut short in Dayton, Ohio. The incident unfolded shortly after midnight in the 100 block of Central Avenue, where an argument between Montgomery and another man escalated into fatal violence. According to police reports, the two men were engaged in a heated verbal dispute while walking along the street. The other individual, later identified as 27-year-old Jamont Matthews, allegedly ran to his nearby apartment on Superior Avenue, retrieved a handgun, and returned to confront Montgomery. What followed was a senseless act of violence that left Montgomery with multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency services were summoned to the scene by concerned citizens who reported hearing as many as eight gunshots and seeing a man lying on the ground, unresponsive. When Dayton Police officers arrived, they discovered Montgomery suffering from his injuries. Despite the immediate administration of first aid by the officers, his wounds proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Montgomery County Coroner's Office later officially identified the victim as Theodore Montgomery. The area was quickly secured by law enforcement, and an investigation into the homicide commenced.
The investigation swiftly led detectives to Jamont Matthews. Evidence gathered at the scene, including six 9mm shell casings found near Montgomery's body, pointed toward his involvement. Acting on this information, police obtained a warrant to search Matthews' apartment. During the search, a loaded 9mm handgun was discovered hidden under a bathroom sink. Matthews was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. He was later formally charged by a Montgomery County grand jury with two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, and one count of tampering with evidence. A judge set his bond at $1 million, and he remains incarcerated at the Montgomery County Jail. The case against Jamont Matthews is now proceeding through the legal system, with the initial arraignment marking the first step in what is expected to be a lengthy judicial process to bring justice for the death of Theodore Montgomery.
