On the warm evening of July 25, 2026, the life of 16-year-old Lamerion L. Davis of Washington Park, Illinois, was tragically cut short by gunfire. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. in the 1100 block of Camp Jackson Road in Cahokia Heights, a busy area near a McDonald's and a gas station. When officers from the Cahokia Heights Police Department arrived at the scene, they found Lamerion with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The St. Clair County Coroner later confirmed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the death of the teenager was swiftly taken over by the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, a specialized unit that handles serious crimes. Investigators diligently followed up on approximately 30 to 60 leads, conducting numerous interviews and reviewing evidence to piece together the events of that fatal evening. According to Lamerion's mother, her son had been playing basketball with friends earlier that day at a court on Falling Springs Road in Cahokia Heights. An argument reportedly broke out with two individuals who had approached him. His mother stated that she later learned these individuals had been watching him. Lamerion then walked about two miles to the McDonald's on Camp Jackson Road and was heading towards a gas station across the street when he was shot. His mother shared the heartbreaking detail that he was shot in the back and the head.
Within days of the shooting, the diligent work of the Major Case Squad led to a significant breakthrough. On July 30, 2026, the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office filed charges against 20-year-old Cleveland J. Ware of Cahokia Heights. The charges against Ware included first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Initially, Ware was at large, and authorities sought the public's help in locating him. However, he was taken into custody and booked into the St. Clair County Jail on July 31, 2026, where he was held without bond. While the arrest brought a sense of progress in the case, the legal proceedings were just beginning. The case underscored the devastating impact of gun violence on the community and left a family to grapple with the profound loss of a young life.
