On the evening of Friday, December 12, 2025, the community of Cahokia Heights, Illinois, became the scene of a violent double homicide investigation after police discovered the body of 67-year-old Bruce A. Mason. Officers were dispatched to the 3900 block of Walnut Street around 9:11 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Mason, a resident of Maryville, Illinois, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the head inside a Toyota RAV4. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mason was a Navy veteran and a skilled blacksmith who owned a welding business, leaving behind a family that included a daughter and grandchildren.
The investigation, led by the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, quickly expanded when detectives executed a search warrant the following afternoon at a residence near where Mason’s vehicle had been parked. Inside the home, they discovered the body of a second victim, 44-year-old Laniya Joyce White. Authorities determined that White, who lived at the residence, had also been shot in the head. Police described the two victims as acquaintances, noting that Mason was known to frequently park his vehicle in White’s driveway. Investigators characterized the killings as a targeted attack rather than a random act of violence.
On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, authorities took a person of interest into custody, identifying him as 54-year-old Shawn L. Williams of Belleville, Illinois. The following day, the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Williams with two counts of first-degree murder. During a subsequent detention hearing, prosecutors presented evidence alleging that cellphone data placed Williams at the scene for approximately three hours on the day of the murders, contradicting his claim that he had only visited briefly to purchase narcotics. Audio evidence recovered from the area also reportedly captured the sound of gunshots during the timeframe Williams was present. A judge ordered him to remain in custody pending trial, while his defense attorney maintained his denial of the charges.
