In the late hours of a summer night in Hickory, North Carolina, the life of 30-year-old Kendall Lorian Lineberger was tragically cut short. On July 25, 2026, deputies from the Burke County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence on River Rock Road around 10:41 p.m. following a distressing call about a fight and a possible shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Lineberger with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the deputies, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into Lineberger's death quickly pointed to a domestic dispute. According to search warrants, the shooting occurred at Lineberger's home, which was just 150 feet away from the residence of his romantic partner's ex-boyfriend. Lineberger's partner, Carrie Bolick, informed investigators that she had been arguing with Lineberger after returning from grocery shopping. During their argument, her ex-boyfriend, 40-year-old Kenneth Lee Potter, and another man allegedly entered the home, with at least one of them carrying a baseball bat. Bolick retreated to a bedroom, from where she heard a physical altercation followed by a gunshot. She then escaped through a window and saw Potter leaving the scene in his red convertible BMW.
Following the investigation by the Burke County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division, a warrant was issued for Kenneth Lee Potter. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with murder. Potter is being held without bond. Court records indicate that Potter had an initial court appearance on July 27, and a probable cause hearing was scheduled for August 17. An attorney has been appointed to represent him.
