In the immediate aftermath, detectives executed search warrants and announced the first arrest on June 3: 20-year-old Garon Nathaniel Killian of Lenoir was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder connected to the shooting that killed Shawn Patrick Hood and wounded 11 others. Authorities said additional arrests were possible as they worked to identify all those involved.
As the investigation progressed, officials disclosed that Shawn Patrick Hood, 58, was struck unintentionally by a partygoer who returned fire at assailants firing from a nearby hillside. Citing North Carolina self-defense laws, the sheriff said no criminal charges would be filed against the individual whose bullet killed him. Separately, six men were indicted on charges including conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and 63 counts of attempted first-degree murder, and a seventh person—a woman—was charged with four counts of accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder. Investigators described the attack as premeditated, tied to gang affiliations and personal animosities.
