In the early morning hours of Sunday, July 26, 2026, the life of 34-year-old Ceontae D. Matthews was tragically cut short. Matthews, a male, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds around 3:10 a.m. in the 4000 block of Pontoon Road in Pontoon Beach, Illinois, just outside of a daycare center. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The incident prompted an intensive investigation led by the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, which diligently pursued 45 leads, conducted numerous interviews, and collected evidence to piece together the events of that fatal morning.
The investigation moved swiftly, and within days, authorities announced that four individuals had been charged in connection with the homicide. The charges were filed by the Madison County State's Attorney's Office, led by State's Attorney Tom Haine. The most serious charges were brought against 22-year-old Davondrea L. Williams of East Saint Louis, Illinois, who faces two counts of first-degree murder, one count of unlawful use of a machine gun, and one count of being a felon in possession of a weapon. Another man, 20-year-old Malik A. Simpson of Saint Louis, Missouri, was charged with one count of aggravated battery and one count of obstructing justice.
Two other individuals were also implicated in the alleged cover-up of the crime. Deonna J. Williams, a 24-year-old from Granite City, Illinois, and 46-year-old Decarlon T. Traylor of East Saint Louis, Illinois, were both charged with one count of obstructing justice. Authorities credited the successful and rapid progression of the investigation to the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies, including the Pontoon Beach Police Department and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services. A crucial element in identifying the suspects was the use of license plate reader technology, which provided vital information that advanced the case. While arrests have been made and charges have been filed, the legal process is still in its early stages, and the case will now move through the court system to determine the guilt or innocence of the accused and deliver justice for the death of Ceontae Matthews.
