Sean D. “YBC Bam” Williams, 18, a Black male, was shot multiple times on the night of June 4, 2020, in the 2500 block of Madison Avenue in Granite City, Illinois. Officers arrived around 10:33 p.m. to find him gravely wounded; he was taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated to assist Granite City Police as detectives pieced together what had happened outside the residence.

Within days, investigators identified two local teens as suspects. Deandre J. Richardson, 17, and Nicholas Rickman, 16, were charged as adults with first-degree murder and armed robbery, each held on $1,000,000 bail. Prosecutors alleged that during the encounter the defendants took a. 40-caliber handgun and marijuana from Williams by force; Richardson also faced a charge for possessing a stolen. 40-caliber semi-automatic handgun.

As the case moved toward trial, the prosecution's narrative took shape: Williams and Rickman knew each other, and Rickman had lured Williams to the Madison Avenue address to rob him of marijuana and money. After the shooting, Rickman tried to avoid capture by turning off his phone for days and shaving his hair while police searched. Richardson chose to plead guilty to first-degree murder before the jury reached its verdict on Rickman.

On October 7, 2022, a Madison County jury found Nicholas Rickman guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery in Williams's killing. In January 2023, a judge sentenced Rickman to 32 years in state prison, noting he had been 16 years old at the time of the offense. The verdict and sentence closed the central questions of responsibility in the case while acknowledging, in courtroom statements from family and officials, that no outcome could fully answer the loss of the young rapper's life.
