Jeremiah Latrell Easter, a 32-year-old man from Charlotte, North Carolina, was killed in a shooting during the early morning hours of August 2, 2026, in northwest Charlotte. Shortly after 1 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers were dispatched to the 3600 block of Bardot Drive after receiving a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. When officers arrived, they found Easter suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. MEDIC responded but pronounced him dead at the scene. A second person was also injured in the shooting and was transported to a local hospital with injuries authorities described as non-life-threatening.
The shooting occurred in a residential area near Beatties Ford Road and Capps Hill Mine Road. Homicide detectives were called to the scene along with crime-scene personnel, who processed the area and collected physical evidence. CMPD's Operations Command, Victim Services and the Charlotte Fire Department also assisted. Police initially released few details about what led to the gunfire, and authorities did not publicly identify the surviving injured person or describe that person's relationship to Easter. Investigators also did not immediately disclose a possible motive or the circumstances that brought Easter, the injured individual and the eventual suspect together.
As detectives continued investigating, they identified 37-year-old Trevon Damion Young as a suspect. CMPD obtained warrants for Young's arrest, and on August 6, four days after the killing, members of the department's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested him. Young was taken to CMPD's Law Enforcement Center, where homicide detectives interviewed him, before he was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
Young was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Easter's death. He was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, an allegation connected to the additional person who survived the shooting. Authorities further charged Young with possession of a firearm by a felon involving the discharge of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Following his arrest, he was expected to make an initial court appearance on August 7.
Police have not publicly released a detailed account of the events immediately preceding the shooting, including what interaction may have occurred before the gunfire, what investigators believe motivated the attack, or whether Easter and Young knew each other beforehand. No additional suspects have been publicly identified in connection with Easter's death. As of the latest available reporting, the case remained an active homicide investigation, with Trevon Damion Young in custody and facing the murder and related felony charges.
