On November 12, 2024, at approximately 3:30 a.m., 22-year-old Apree Dontell Leak was found with a gunshot wound at the Circle K gas station on South Tryon Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. He had been transported to this location by an acquaintance after being shot elsewhere. Upon arrival, paramedics were flagged down to assess his condition. Leak was subsequently taken to Atrium Main hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) initiated a homicide investigation, noting that the Circle K was not the primary crime scene. Detectives have not publicly disclosed the original location of the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified. CMPD continues to urge anyone with information to contact their Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
Leak's death has left the local community in shock, especially in the Ayrsley neighborhood near the gas station, an area typically perceived as safe. Residents expressed surprise and concern over the incident, highlighting the rarity of such violent occurrences in their vicinity.
Prior to his death, Leak had a history of legal issues, including arrests for felony possession of marijuana, carrying a concealed gun, and resisting a public officer. Some of these charges were dismissed or resulted in deferred prosecution.
A funeral service for Leak was held on November 25, 2024, at New Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church in Charlotte, where family and friends gathered to mourn his passing.
