In a senseless act of violence that shattered a San Antonio community, 20-year-old Drayden Quiroz and his 11-year-old brother, Maliki Perales, were tragically killed on the evening of August 5, 2026. The brothers were in their family's vehicle, backing out of their driveway on Acadian Drive, when a neighbor from across the street, identified as 40-year-old Daniel Antonio Perez, allegedly opened fire on them. The attack was described by authorities as entirely unprovoked. Both brothers were rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Maliki succumbed to his injuries that night, while Drayden passed away the following morning.
The terror of that evening did not end with the shooting of the two brothers. After firing at the vehicle, Perez allegedly turned his attention to two other siblings, a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, who were standing near the front door of the family's home. Fortunately, his shots missed them. Following the shooting, Perez fled the scene on foot. Ring doorbell footage from a neighboring house captured him frantically knocking on a door, claiming he did not want to be killed, in an apparent attempt to suggest he had acted in self-defense. However, investigators stated that the evidence did not support this claim. Perez also called 911 while he was on the run, admitting to shooting his neighbors but not disclosing his location.
Authorities were able to track Perez's location by pinging his cellphone signal and apprehended him in a backyard about a quarter-mile from his home approximately ten minutes after the shooting. The handgun believed to have been used in the attack was recovered from a nearby drainage culvert. Daniel Antonio Perez was arrested and faces two counts of capital murder. He is being held on a $2.3 million bond. Neighbors described the victims' family as warm and welcoming, often feeding others in the neighborhood. The family themselves said they had lived in their home for over two years but had never had any prior interaction with Perez. The case against Daniel Antonio Perez is pending in court.
