On the night of August 6, 2026, a verbal dispute in the front yard of a residence on the 200 block of Jesse Brown Street in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, escalated to a fatal conclusion. In the ensuing violence, 28-year-old Dangealo Applewhite of Bassfield was shot in the abdomen. Emergency services were called to the scene around 11 p.m., and Applewhite was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The Hattiesburg Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Detectives determined that the incident was not a random act of violence but rather the result of a heated argument. The suspected shooter had fled the scene before officers arrived, prompting a search for the individual responsible for Applewhite's death. The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect.

Within a day, authorities had apprehended 21-year-old Jalen Detwan Peterson of Hattiesburg. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence in connection with the death of Dangealo Applewhite. Peterson was booked into the Forrest County Jail as the investigation continued. Law enforcement officials have characterized the shooting as an isolated incident and have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The case against Peterson is now pending in the criminal justice system, and as of the initial reports, it has not yet proceeded to trial.
