In the late summer of 2019, the life of Van Leonard Luvene Jr., a 41-year-old man, was tragically cut short in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. On the evening of Wednesday, August 14th, officers from the Hattiesburg Police Department were dispatched to the scene of a shooting where they discovered Luvene had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The incident unfolded on North 23rd Avenue, where Luvene was found inside a vehicle, the victim of a violent encounter that would soon become a homicide
investigation.
As authorities began to piece together the events of that night, their investigation quickly led them to a person of interest. Within a day of the shooting, the Hattiesburg Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect. The individual taken into custody was identified as 28-year-old Latina Funchess. In the initial stages of the legal process, Funchess was formally charged in connection with Luvene's death.
Following her arrest, Latina Funchess faced a first appearance in court where the gravity of the accusations against her became clear. She was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Van Leonard Luvene Jr. In addition to the murder charge, Funchess was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. During this initial hearing, a bond was set at $500,000 for the murder charge, reflecting the seriousness of the alleged crime. A separate bond of $10,000 was set for the firearm possession charge.
The case then proceeded through the judicial system. In February 2020, a Forrest County grand jury reviewed the evidence presented by prosecutors and handed down an indictment against Funchess for first-degree murder, formally moving the case towards a trial. However, the path to a resolution was not immediate. After a series of legal proceedings and continuances, a significant development occurred in October 2021. In a turn of events, Latina Funchess entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter. This plea brought an end to the nearly two-year-long legal battle, and she was subsequently sentenced for her role in the death of Van Leonard Luvene Jr.
