Jermaine Hunter, a 25-year-old Black male, was found shot to death outside his home on McCall Street in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on June 29, 2020. The Hattiesburg Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the fatal shooting.
Investigators identified 22-year-old Alex Carmichael Williams, also of Hattiesburg, as the primary suspect in Hunter's murder.
A warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Williams, and authorities warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous. For several months, Williams remained at large. In October 2020, he surrendered to the Hattiesburg Police, accompanied by his family, pastor, and attorney. He was subsequently booked into the Forrest County Jail on the first-degree murder charge.
While out on bond for the murder of Jermaine Hunter, Williams was implicated in another fatal shooting. In August 2020, he was allegedly involved in the shooting death of 55-year-old Darrell Lamont Walker in Nashville, Tennessee. In September 2021, Williams, then 23, surrendered to authorities in Nashville after being indicted on a first-degree murder charge in connection with Walker's death. At the time of his surrender in Nashville, it was noted that he was free on bond from the Hattiesburg murder charge. Williams is being held in Nashville without bond.
