The investigation by the West Virginia State Police was swift, leading to the arrest of three suspects from Bluefield. Terrance Shade Thomas, 24, was identified as the alleged shooter and faced the most severe charges, including second-degree murder, conspiracy, and three counts of attempted murder. His father, Terrance C. Thomas, 44, was charged with second-degree murder and conspiracy. A third man, 35-year-old Bradley Billings, was charged with conspiracy. According to court documents, Shade Thomas admitted to police that he, his father, and Billings had gone to the school with the intention of fighting Blankenship and his friends. He claimed that upon seeing the other group arming themselves with brass knuckles and hammers, he retrieved his gun. He further alleged that the other group attempted to run over his father with their truck, which prompted him to open fire. While an arrest has been made, the case against the three men is still moving through the legal system, and as of now, there have been no convictions or sentencing in relation to the death of Dawlton Blankenship.
