In the early hours of Saturday, June 27, 2026, the city of Boston was marred by a burst of violence that claimed the life of 26-year-old Jose Dantes of Brockton and injured four others. The incident unfolded around 1:45 a.m. in the Mattapan neighborhood, where Boston Police officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 1447 Blue Hill Avenue. Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene with victims suffering from gunshot wounds at two separate locations.
Two individuals were found near 1439 Blue Hill Avenue, while two more, including Dantes, were located in the vicinity of 1460 Blue Hill Avenue. Dantes was pronounced dead at the scene.
The three other victims found by police, along with a fifth individual who later transported himself to a hospital outside of Boston, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. While the survivors began their physical recovery, the family and friends of Jose Dantes were left to grapple with his sudden and violent death. An obituary described Jose Woosvelito Dantes, who was born in Petion-Ville, Haiti, as a "good soul and a good man" who was deeply loved by his family. He was a father and was remembered for his positive attitude and love for fashion. He and his family moved from Haiti to Trinidad and Tobago before settling in the United States. He attended Charlestown High School where he played football.
In the wake of the shooting, the Boston Police Department's Homicide Unit launched an active and ongoing investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities urged anyone with information to come forward and contact the Homicide Unit, even offering the option to submit anonymous tips. As of the available reports from late June 2026, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects had been publicly identified. The case remains an open investigation, leaving a community searching for answers and a family waiting for justice for the loss of a young man's life. The motive for the shooting and the events leading up to it have not been released to the public, and without any arrests or identified suspects, the path to legal proceedings, including any potential convictions or sentencing, has not yet begun.
