In the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, on February 19, 2020, the life of 18-year-old Kareem Omar Garnett Jr., a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. Around noon on Cameron Street, the sound of gunfire shattered the day. When members of the Boston Police Department's Youth Violence Strike Force arrived at the scene, they found Garnett suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led to the swift arrest of a 17-year-old male from Dorchester. This individual was taken into custody and subsequently faced charges of manslaughter and various weapons violations. Due to his status as a juvenile, his name was not publicly released. He was arraigned in Dorchester Juvenile Court. The incident, which occurred during the school vacation week, was described as heartbreaking by Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins, who noted the young ages of those involved.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, another teenager, a 16-year-old from Dorchester, was arrested at the scene. He was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possessing a loaded firearm. While the 17-year-old was charged with manslaughter in connection with Garnett's death, the investigation remained ongoing as authorities sought to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Boston Police encouraged anyone with information to come forward to assist homicide detectives.
